An unverified profile is worth roughly what a CV is worth: it tells you what someone would like you to believe. That is a particular problem in mentoring, because the buyer is usually less expert than the seller and cannot evaluate the claim on its merits.
Verification does the qualifying work the mentee cannot do. It also protects the mentors who do have the record — on an unverified platform an honest profile competes directly with an exaggerated one, and the exaggeration usually wins the click.
Verification is not a badge, it is a process with a scope. The useful question is what was actually checked: government identity, employment history, professional registration, or simply that an email address works.
