The vocabulary of structured mentorship

Mentoring is acquiring the vocabulary of an industry: intake, escrow, verification, outcome tracking. These are short, plain definitions of the terms used across this site, written to be useful whether or not you ever use Mentor10.

Mentorship platform: A mentorship platform is a single system that runs a mentoring relationship end to end: how a mentee applies, how sessions are booked and held, what each session leaves behind as a record, how progress is tracked, and how the mentor is paid.
Structured session record: A structured session record is what a mentoring session leaves behind in a fixed shape: the agenda it followed, the decisions taken, the actions agreed and the next step. It is stored against the mentee and shared with them, rather than kept as the mentor's private notes.
Escrow in mentoring: Escrow in mentoring means the mentee pays at the moment of booking, the money is held by a regulated payment partner rather than by either party, and it is released to the mentor once the session has been delivered.
Mentor verification: Mentor verification is the check a platform performs on a mentor's identity and professional credentials before that mentor can take bookings. It turns a profile from a set of self-made claims into claims a third party has confirmed.
Cohort mentoring: Cohort mentoring is mentoring delivered to a group moving through shared material on a common schedule, rather than to one person at a time. Sessions are held with the group, but progress is still tracked for each member individually.
Sponsored mentorship seat: A sponsored mentorship seat is a place in a mentoring engagement funded by someone other than the mentee — an NGO, a foundation or an employer. The mentee receives the mentoring at reduced cost or none; the mentor is paid their full rate by the sponsor.
Mentorship outcome tracking: Mentorship outcome tracking is measuring what changed for the mentee: goals set and reached, milestones met, and results captured after the engagement has ended. It is distinct from activity tracking, which counts sessions held and hours delivered.
